For me, music is a form of art that lets
my mind and soul express itself and escape into a world of pure imagination,
freedom, and fun. When I write songs I try to create good melodies and weave
in words that tell stories. Classic
rock, blues, and jazz are my favorite types of music. Growing up, the
musicians that inspired me were U2, Dave Matthews, Nirvana, BB King, Smashing
Pumpkins, the Beatles, Carlos Santana, and Django Reinhart.
Some of my favorite musicians today are U2, Nora Jones, Jose Rizo’s
Jazz on the Latin Side All Stars, Mana, and John Mayer.
Richard and Thuan are my brothers and we
grew up very close to each other. Thuan bought me my first guitar and gave my
first few lessons. I met Sam and Kyle in high school and we became partners
for almost everything from school projects, tennis matches, Starcraft, surf
buddies, to roommates in college. I want to mention other Caussion members who
once played and shared good times with us: Vy Troung (vocal), Holly Tanner
(vocal), Mischa (vocal), Max Rhee (drummer), Peter (drummer), Jessie (drummer),
Brian Kim (guitar), Andrew Nguyen (violin/keyboard), Liz Nguyen (piano),
Hamilton (bongos), Janice (Canadian girl) and Kristen (our number one fan).
Three years ago I moved out to L.A. for school and fell in love with its diverse culture.
L.A.’s melting pot has taught me so much about creating music and
taking the initiatives to explore other styles.
Live jazz clubs, Cuban salsa music, Bossa Nova, rock concerts on the
corner street, R&B dance clubs have all expanded my artistic skills.
I am currently on summer break, which
gives me some time to write again. My summer plan is to record as many songs
as possible, hit the beach to surf the waves, learn to water start and jibe in
windsurfing, clap while Laura plays capoeira, do some traveling, and study my
drugs. Life is just too short with too many things to do.
